Childproof your Balconies and Decks

Posted on Posted in Balconies, Deck Safety

If your house has a balcony and/or a deck, don’t forget to include them in planning to childproof your home. Nobody wants tragic accidents to happen especially at home.

Check if the railings on your balcony and/or deck have more than four-inch gaps in between. If it is more than four inches, you’ll need to make modifications to stop your child from squeezing through. You may use plastic garden fencing, shade cloth, a sheet of clear plastic, or rigid sheets of Plexiglas.

Get in to the habit of moving balcony/deck furniture from railings to lessen the chances of your baby climbing up.

Consider installing latches or locks on doors leading to your balcony or deck making sure it’s out of reach from children.
